Heat a pan over medium heat and drizzle in some oil. Add the diced onion, diced jalapeños, brown sugar, and apple cider vinegar. Cook the mixture, stirring occasionally, until softened and caramelized. Once done, set the jam aside.
Divide the ground beef into four equal portions. Roll each portion into a ball, about 1/4 pound each.
Preheat your griddle to high heat. Place the burger balls on the griddle and smash them flat to your desired size. Season each patty with salt, pepper, or your preferred burger seasoning. Cook the patties for 2–3 minutes on one side, then flip them. Add a slice of American cheese to each patty and let it melt as the burgers finish cooking.
Drizzle a little more oil on the griddle. Fry the eggs to your preference, whether sunny-side up, over-easy, or medium. Cover the eggs with a basting dome to ensure even cooking.
Lightly toast the hamburger buns on the griddle until golden brown.
Place one cooked smash burger patty on the bottom half of each toasted bun. Top the patty with a fried egg and a generous spoonful of onion and jalapeño jam. Finish with the top bun. Serve immediately.
